AUGUSTA, Maine- Supporters of Same-Sex Marriage submitted tens of thousands of signatures today to the Secretary of State's Office in an attempt to place a referendum question on the ballot in November that if passed would allow same-sex marriage in Maine.
The Maine legislature passed a same-sex marriage law in 2009. Opponents gathered enough signatures for a People's veto referendum question, and the law was overturned at the polls in November.
Same-sex marriage opponents have already vowed to fight to defeat the referendum question should the Secretary of State certify that enough signatures were submitted.
